OM5 is really only required in datacentre applications under 300m. For just about every other use I would recommend singlemode. OM3 or 4 is a sensible choice if you have existing infrastructure and short distances.

Core alignment fusion splicing, in the image on the right whe have a top and side view of a single 125um Fibre  (strand of hair) with a 9um cental glass core (single mode). The two fibres have been aligned inside the machine and fusion spliced (arc welded) together.
